The Kolaveri Di Effect

I distinctly remember waking up on 16th November and checking my Facebook homepage flooded with status updates about something called Kolaveri, with most of the words in the statuses ending with '-u' and people describing it as a funny, stupid yet awesome piece of work. Confused and curious I turned to Google and was presented with a Youtube video link with a snapshot of what looked like an Indian man with a microphone headset in a recording room. 4 minutes into the video and I knew why people were talking about it all over the place.

It starts of with a sing song narrative, the singer Dhanush describing the song as a Soup Song, a flop song. At this point there's not much you can do other than smile and listen on. You're already infected by the insanely addictive and catchy tune . As the song progresses into the 3rd and 4th stanza, the funnily phrased sentences and subtitles keep you singing along. The best part of the song according to me is when Dhanush manages to rhyme Holy Cow and Happy How? into one sentence. I mean, I don't really remember any singer/songwriter do that in the recent past. Sung in partly Tamil and English, the first Tanglish song of its kind. The video didn't take much time to go viral, with people coming back again and again to watch it. From what I remember, was 2000 views when I first saw it, when i checked it back again in the evening it had already crossed 1.5 million views. It has a total of 5 million views at this point of time as I write this, and by the time you read it, it might have already crossed 7 million. That's the Kolaveri effect.

If you haven't already heard the song, I suggest you do so now. As people say, Funny stupid awesome song
