Acquisition April
So 2012 brought in lots of changes for the tech world starting with the launch of The New iPad, introduction of iOS 5.1 and much more and also couple of takeovers. Starting with Google buying up popular online image editing website Picnik which lets users edit photos and add effects all through an online portal. Google announced the takeover in their blog.
"Today, we're excited to announce that Google has acquired Picnik, one of the first sites to bring photo editing to the cloud. Using Picnik, you can crop, do touch-ups and add cool effects to your photos, all without leaving your web browser," mentions Google's blog .
Popular image sharing website Flickr.com known to use Picnik's editor for its images will not continue to use Picnik as its online editor after the acquisition. What remains to be seen is whether Picnik will still charge a premium amount for some of its premium tools and effects or does the acquisition with Google make everything free, like any other Google products.
Picnik will be established on Google's social network Google+ to enable users to edit their photos and images using Picnik's tools.
Shortly after this, Facebook acquires Instagram for a whopping $1Billion, the popular free image editing software for Apple devices. An amazing application developed for iOS platform that lets users take photos and digitally filter them using different tools. One of the most popular apps on the Apple Appstore and widely used by iPod/iPhone users.
As of now Instagram will be managed independently as a separate entity by Facebook. However I think otherwise, sooner or later Instagram's photo editing tools will be ported to Facebook itself to let users edit their photos to counter Google's Picnik merger with Google+
